With over half a decade's experience of piano teaching, Jo has a thriving teaching practice in Manchester, where she works with a piano studio of up to 20 children and adults.
Jo's pedagogical practice is rooted in the belief that the most effective (and enjoyable!) way to learn the piano is through an approach that not only focuses on the mechanics of piano playing but also on one's musicianship both at and away from the piano (through singing, improvisation and composing). Whether, young children or adult amateurs, Jo encourages all of her students to explore and develop their own individual strengths and musical qualities, whilst simultaneously giving them the tools to improve upon those elements of their playing that they are less happy with.
As well as individual piano and theory lessons, Jo also delivers group musicianship classes for beginners focused on developing musical literacy (note-reading) and aural skills through group singing, musical games and activities. In addition to piano teaching, Jo is much sought-after as an accompanist for ABRSM and Trinity music exams, and is particularly adept at helping nervous exam candidates feel confident and at ease on the big day.
Jo welcomes students of all ages and abilities and teaches from her home in central Manchester, which is furnished with a B1 Yamaha upright piano. Jo is fully DBS-checked and has undertaken Level 1 safeguarding training with NSPCC. Free private parking is available on site.
